#1 Short Stories - I wish I knew better
"Please, Emma! They will never allow me to go to the party... I have no other choice but to say I'll be at your house studying, so please, help me with this just once!", she pleaded dreadfully as I stared at June. She has always been this way, trying to get me to bail her out of trouble and it had started since we were in kindergarten and it didn't look like it is going to stop.
Yet I don't have any option but to agree to help her. We had been best friends and June knew me too well that I would help her, no matter what. Her parents has been very strict towards her and would never ever allow her to attend a party. Even if I opted not to help her, she would just sneak out, but knowing this is a once a lifetime opportunity to attend a cocktail party, June couldn't resist and would like to make sure everything is going smooth, she came to me to ask for my help. Well, I would rather go against my principles and lie for her sake than to get her into another brutal lashing from her father.
However, this time, I felt a strange feeling of uneasiness. I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing, but in the end, I suppressed the gnawing doubts. She would be at the party and return to my home to spend the night. The arrangement isn't unusual as we do sleepovers every so often. But I warned her sternly that there wouldn't be a second time for this. I should've known that she would smile beatifically at anything I say at that moment. Sighing, I went to her parents home to tell them that June is going to be staying with me that night.
Despite the gnawing guilt that kept me up all night because she broke the curfew that was imposed on her, she came back in one piece, delirious with her night of fun. Feeling relieved, and grumpy at the same time about her irresponsibility. The following months has been a bliss for me as she didn't ask me to lie about anything for her that I began to think she has truly reformed, or so I thought.
June's parents came over my house to look for her, which is to my surprise. I hadn't seen her for days, thinking she was nursing her illness at home. But her parents retorted that she has stayed over at my house and had not returned since. The truth suddenly daunted at me. The reason why she didn't need me to lie for her anymore was because her parents was convinced that she was with me all the time. Chills crept slowly down my spine as their parents hostile and accusing gaze landed on my confused face. It was then I realized I've opened the floodgates for June to lie flagrantly.
The next day, I was in hysteria as her lifeless body was found in the hotel. My best friend has passed on because I condoned her lies. I wish I knew better
